Former Reds on the move - Roundup

Tis the season to be moving tralalalalalalalala. Well at least it is for a number of former Kop favourites anyway.

In addition to the recent departures of Harry Kewell, Anthony Le Tallec(the new Zidane, yeh right!), John Arne Riise and 'Two Metre' Peter Crouch, a large collection of former Reds have also been packing up their boots to head for pastures new.

Le Tallec's co-arrival from Le Havre in 2003, Florent Sinama-Pongolle, has left Spanish club Recreativo de Huelva to team-up with fellow ex-Red Luis Garcia at Atletico Madrid following a fruitful first two seasons in La Liga which yielded 22 goals.

How excited are you by the prospect of Villa?

Well I don't know about you but when Rafa Benitez admitted that David Villa is a player he is looking into signing, I went a little bit weak at the knees.

We've all named him as one of our fantasy signings for this summer. But I was never really sure that Benitez felt the same way about the Euro 2008 top scorer.

When asked if the signing of Villa could be an option with Peter Crouch set to move back to Portsmouth, Benitez responded: "We have Fernando Torres, Andriy Voronin, Dirk Kuyt, Ryan Babel and Steven Gerrard, who can play as a second striker.

18 points by the end of September?

Last season the Reds collected an impressive 16 points from their opening seven matches of the Premiership calendar.

However, the team dropped six points before the end of September with three draws as they failed to score and beat Portsmouth away and Birmingham at Anfield while also being denied a morale-boosting win over Chelsea when Rob Styles awarded the West Londoners a ridiculous penalty with the Reds comfortably 1-0 ahead.

Arshavin would consider Liverpool move

Andrei Arshavin only played three matches at Euro 2008. In two of those matches against Sweden and Holland he was immense, dominating the game with his elegant touches and passing, and scaring to death the opposition with his eye for getting into goalscoring positions. Against the Spanish in the semi-final, Arshavin and his fellow Russians came unstuck, but then so did many other teams during the tournament.

He also helped Zenit St. Petersburg win their first-ever Russian Premier League championship ahead of their Moscow rivals in 2007 and the 2008 UEFA Cup Final against Rangers.

Was Harry Kewell wrong to join Galatasaray?

When Harry Kewell signed for Istanbul-based Galatasaray following his summer release from Liverpool, the Australian winger was accused of being insensitive and disrespectful to the the memory of the two Leeds United fans, Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight, who died ahead of the Yorkshire club's UEFA Cup tie with the Turkish giants in 2000.

However, Kewell who spent eight years at Elland Road before moving to Anfield in 2003, retorted: "My love and respect for Leeds and what the club has done for me will never change, no matter what anyone says about me and whatever their motives are. My sense of sorrow and sympathy for the families and friends of Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight will always be with me.

"I chose the number 19 shirt when I signed for Galatasaray as a sign of respect for Leeds because that was the number I got when I first became a regular member of the Leeds starting XI. I felt that it might be a way to demonstrate that I had not forgotten where it all started and I was hoping that in a small way it would help the healing process of the tragedy."

But do you think he should have considered the likely reaction to his transfer and chosen to finish his career elsewhere? Please vote and leave your opinions below.

Rafa and Yossi's love and chemistry

With Peter Crouch on the verge of rejoining Pompey and Xabi Alonso's future still very much up in the air, one player who won't be leaving Anfield this summer is Yossi Benayoun. Why? Because Rafa Benitez loves him. No, Rafa and Yossi haven't had a change in direction in their personal lives over the summer holidays, well at least I don't think they have.

Having been linked with moves to Tottenham, Portsmouth and Manchester City over the summer, it looked as if Benayoun could have been deemed surplus to requirements after just one season on Merseyside. But, Benayoun, who scored 11 goals in 48 games last term, is clearly happy to be at one of the world's greatest clubs judging by his interview with the Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz.

"It seems the media in Israel and England are in a contest to see who's more bored during the slow summer months. The media in England published a story that Rafa Benitez told me finally that I'm staying at Liverpool.

"These reports are the work of the writer's imagination because, even before the season ended, we determined that I would be staying. Benitez told me unequivocally that he brought me here, that I had a very good season, that he's depending on me and that there's no way I'll leave Liverpool.

"I have very good chemistry with Benitez. He loves me. He bought me. I really enjoy being with him, moreover, I had an excellent season. I even surprised myself. Benitez didn't want to hear and isn't prepared to hear about any possibility of letting me go at any price.

"Liverpool is good for me and it was always clear I want to stay and Liverpool wants me. I got better offers financially but these tempting offers don't change my mind. If Liverpool wouldn't want me, I'd leave there in seconds. Even if I had a contract, if I understood they didn't want me, I'd get up right away and leave. But I'm not leaving Liverpool."

What about you? Are you happy to have Yossi in the squad? What did you make of his debut season at the club? And do you think he can get better and offer Liverpool more week in week out? Keep the comments coming below.

Is Carra right to call for fans to banish title talk?

Reds legend and vice-captain Jamie Carragher has called for Reds fans to shelve talk of a title-winning season in favour of focusing on the team making a meaningful challenge for the domestic game's biggest prize - the Premiership title.

He said: "People always talk about us pushing for the league, but to be honest it isn't very often that we've even challenged. If we were challenging with 10 or 15 games to go then who knows? But just a challenge this season would be nice, to still be in the hunt.

"I think it's only happened once since I've been in the team, when I played a few games under Roy Evans. We probably should have won the league but let it slip towards the end. But since then we've never even challenged so that's s something we're all looking for. I'd take a title medal over anything else at the moment because that would make my full set, but I just want to be competitive in the league."
